Vandal Kimonos: a four-month collection launch

+12%net revenue on the same quantities of product, with 33% lower production and 45% lower media costs
My roleAccount manager and project lead. I ran the campaign end to end across a team of outside vendors.
TeamMe as project lead, with a freelance designer, photographer, printer and videographer, and the brand's own team.
Budget and timelineFour months from design kickoff in September to the live launch in December. Budget figures are kept confidential under an NDA, so this page shows percentages and savings.

A one-minute brand film, with two shorter teasers cut for social ads that ran ahead of the launch day.

The problem

Vandal Kimonos is a Hawai'i martial arts apparel brand founded by a team of black belts, with a loyal local following and a private-label account with UFC gyms. Outside Hawai'i, few people knew it. Social engagement was low, it had no brand influencers, and it had little presence in its industry. The goal was a collection that could reach U.S. customers and match the results of its best-selling "All Hawaii" capsule.

What I did

  • Discovery. Learned the business, set the goals, budget and brief, researched competitors and trends, and ran a SWOT analysis.
  • The team. I researched and selected a designer, photographer, printer and action-sports videographer who fit the brand's look and values.
  • Product. New designs and a rebrand of existing products, made at higher quality and lower cost through a better source.
  • Media. Shot new photos and video at lower cost, and cut two video teasers plus one full one-minute film for social ads.
  • Launch. One synchronized day: social blast, email blast, brand-influencer launch and webstore items live. Teasers ran ahead of it, and I cleaned up the webstore and its back end.
  • Email. Six custom email templates built and sent through Mailchimp.

Source: my case study for the client.

+12%
net revenue against previous years, on the same quantities and amount of product

How this was measured: from my case study for the client. Other revenue figures are confidential under an NDA.

33% and 45%
lower production costs and lower media costs

How this was measured: from my case study, against what the brand paid before.

30%
email open rate across about 11,000 delivered emails, against a 16.75% industry average

How this was measured: from my case study, based on about 10,700 users in the system.

What I am not claiming. Revenue beyond the 12% is under NDA and is not shown. Stronger awareness results were expected to take several phases beyond this one campaign.

How I got there

I researched the brand and its competitors, picked vendors to match its aesthetic, then ran four phases: design, production and scouting, photoshoot and teasers, and a single launch day, followed by a recap with the client.

Stack and workflow

Mailchimp for email and a Joomla webstore. I recommended moving to Shopify next.

Easter egg

Congratulations. You found it.

Most people read the case studies. You went straight for the footer logo, which tells me you notice details. That is a good habit in a marketer, and a good sign for us working together.

The secret: this whole site was built with AI, directed by me, and it costs $0 to host. My old site's hosting cost $350+ for three years, almost $120 a year, plus about $20 a year for the domain. I still pay for the domain. The hosting is free.
